Why do we go?

Jesus gave the Great Commission -- Matthew 28:19-20

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

How do we carry out the Great Commission on a medical mission trip?

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church medical mission trips partner with Three Strand Cord (www.3strandcord.org) and a local congregation in Haiti called CEDAN Mission Church (www.cedanmission.org).

During our mission we greet people at each clinic site in the name of Jesus Christ and announce the simple good news of the gospel: "While we are here to heal the body, Jesus is here to heal your soul. We serve with love because God first loved us. You can know the power of God's love in your life and you can extend that love to others."

Following this announcement of good news we follow the example of Jesus by demonstrating his love. Jesus demonstrated his love by washing feet and dying on the cross, we demonstrate God's love by treating their medical conditions.  When appropriate, our medical and non-medial volunteers may also find opportunities to pray with patients, or share God's love with them through a translator.

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another. If any one of you has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in you? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."  John 3:16-18 (TNIV)
